Chapter 7

“You failed to kill the children.” A tall woman shook her head as she looked over the warriors that had been sent to Ribe.

“And one of you lost your sword.” A short man looked less than impressed. He was sat on the throne of Hedeby.

“Yes, King Viggo Odinsen.” the warriors replied.

“Queen Rena gave you all brand new blades and you carelessly lose them?” the king demanded.

“We are sorry, King Viggo Odinsen.” the warriors chorused.

“Sorry? You failures,” Queen Rena spat, “we have the allegiance of the south, your king wears one of the arm rings of Yngvar and yet all our plans could be undone because you didn’t kill a bunch of children!”

“Now, now, Rena, it is not too late to set things right. After the attack, the elders will go to Hedeby; they will call for a council. They will try to buy time for the children to find the other rings. The warriors can chase down the children in the wilds. They aren’t born to fight and are far from ready for war. Find them and kill them.”

“Yes, King Viggo Odinsen.”

“So, it is decided, Myrtle, Sibel, Frigg and Axel will go to Jelling. The rest of us will remain here and prepare our warriors for war with Hedeby.” Pav said. He was sat in the mead hall at the head of the long table. Alessia, Sibel, Myrtle, Aran, Frigg, Kaleb, Inga and Axel were with him.

“You really think that Hedeby might attack us whilst we call for a council in Jelling?” Axel asked.

“Yes, if their armies in the south are ready, they won’t wait. I spoke to some fishermen that were running away from the south. They said that Viggo Ottarsen has named himself king and declared that he is a son of Odin. I suspect that it was his wife that had the blades forged for the warriors.” Alessia said with a small measure of scorn.

“Rena? She was shipwrecked wasn’t she?” Frigg asked.

“Yes, she washed up on the shore near Hedeby. Viggo found her and saved her life. The fishermen believe that she cast a spell on him because he fell in love with her and married her a few days after she washed up there. His personality changed rapidly and a few months ago he declared himself king of Hedeby.” said Kaleb.

“Do you think she might be a Havsrå?” Inga frowned.

“Or the daughter of one. They are powerful and men do fall in love with them.” Sibel said, running her hand over her chin.

“If she comes to the council, then we will do what we can to find out more about her,” Myrtle said, “We should make preparations to leave, it will take us long enough to reach Jelling, we shouldn’t delay.”

The children left the troll's hut and headed to the north. They rode towards the town of Vorbasse. It was the closest town to Ribe and the people of Vorbasse had long been friends to the people of Ribe. It took several days to reach the town.
